When Should You Refill Your Home Heating Oil Tank?

The gauge reading, before anything else

Sediment and water accumulate at the bottom of a tank over years. Condensation forms on the inside wall of a partly empty tank through temperature swings, runs down, and sits under the oil because water is denser. Two conditions change the picture and are worth watching for.
